Viagogo strengthens the online ticket business: buy Stubhub from Ebay

The e-commerce giant eBay announced that it has reached an agreement to sell its subsidiary StubHub, one of the leading e-ticketing portals in the United States, to the Viagogo ticket resale platform.

From the merger between StubHub and Viagogo, a company founded in the United Kingdom but based in Switzerland and one of the most important ticketing sites in Europe, a global giant in the secondary ticketing sector could be born, able to cover all kinds of events, from concerts to sports, from theater to large ceremonies. Together, it is estimated that the two portals can sell hundreds of thousands of tickets every day, covering over seventy countries around the world.

Ticket giants

But the two ticket giants are not completely unrelated. Viagogo founder Eric Baker also co-founded StubHub in 2000, but retired from the company before it was bought by eBay in 2007. In the meantime, the American platform also acquired the Spanish ticket reseller Ticketbis in 2016, thus guaranteeing a strong expansion in the markets of South America and Asia.

Great satisfaction is expressed by eBay, whose interim CEO, Scott Schenkel, replacing the resigning David Wenig, commented: 'We believe this transaction is an excellent result and maximizes the long-term value for the shareholders of eBay. Over the past few months, eBay's board of directors and top management have completed a thorough review of the company's strategies and portfolio, concluding that this transaction is the best route for both eBay and StubHub.

The deal could also give eBay accounts more breathing room, as in this year's third quarter accounts report the company reported a 57% drop in earnings over the same period last year, and estimates the Christmas period had been revised downwards, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Viagogo Celebrates a New Milestone in International Expansion with Launch in Australia ...

Viagogo, the world's largest ticket market, launched its service in Australia, providing consumers in Down Under lands with a guaranteed and safe way to buy and sell tickets to live entertainment and sports events in Australia and around the world, at the last minute and even when tickets are sold out at the box office.

Our launch in Australia marks another important milestone in our international expansion. We already provide options, convenience and customer protection when reselling tickets in approximately 50 countries and we believe that our service will revolutionize the way Australians buy and sell tickets to their favorite events.

According to an independent survey requested by viagogo, over a third (38 percent) of Australians who buy a ticket want to resell it because they are unable to attend the event. However, half a million Australians fell in a blow when buying tickets last year and the majority (95 percent) do not trust resellers of auction websites, such as eBay, and online classifieds, such as Gumtree.

What the research clearly demonstrates is that there is a huge demand in Australia for a service like ours that guarantees entry and reduces risk for the consumer. Eight out of 10 Australians are in favor of reselling tickets, but have had negative experiences on sites like eBay and Gumtree and are looking for a safer alternative. Now that our service is available in Australia, they never have to take any risks again.

Partnerships

The launch of viagogo was also marked by the revelation of partnerships with two of the biggest Australian football clubs (Aussie Rules), Collingwood and Richmond. As part of a three-year agreement with each club, viagogo will become its official ticket market and provide members and fans with unparalleled options for local and overseas events.

We have already partnered with almost a hundred of the biggest names in sport and entertainment worldwide and are looking forward to kick-starting our new partnerships with Collingwood and Richmond. These long-term agreements demonstrate our investment in Australia and our commitment to this market.
