How We're Going To Learn To Live With Covid - A Doctor's View.
What a change we've seen in the last 12 months. At the beginning of last year, protective face masks were completely alien to Europeans, now they're part of our every day lives, just like putting on your shoes. Thankfully the vaccine was developed with incredible speed and the roll out has been equally impressive - however this does not mean that the virus has gone away. Unfortunately we are going to have to learn to live with Covid and other airborne pathogens in the future and face masks will continue to play an important role in reducing transmission. We now know that the severity of a Covid infection is a direct result of the 'viral load' inhaled; in other words if you breathe in a lot of infected particles coughed or sneezed directly at you, you will become more ill than if you pick it up from someone standing next to you wearing a mask. So it follows that masks that offer the highest levels of small particulate filtration are unquestionably the most efficient barrier in terms of self protection. Unfortunately most cloth masks, whilst they do help to protect those around you, are simply not designed to provide any real protection to the wearer against airborne viruses.
I would strongly advocate that if you want to take control of your own health and safety, then wear a mask that is certified to FFP2 standard with at least 95% BFE/PFE when in close proximity with others. I wear Cradle's self cleaning anti-viral mask in my surgery, because it offers double protection; it meets the FFP2 standard for filtration but it also features an innovative anti-viral treatment called Polygiene ViralOff that kills all viruses within two hours and beats any other protection on the market. I have to wear it all day, and its design and breathability is far superior to anything else I've tried. It is also washable and reusable, so doesn't add to the worrying levels of waste and litter we've seen since the introduction of masks. I personally wouldn't trust anything else to protect me. With four layers of a super fine, bio-degradable, hypo-allergenic mesh textile this mask is constructed with the latest ultrasonic welding techniques which filter out over 95% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including virus-laden air borne moisture and saliva. (Just to give an idea of how small 0.3 microns is - you can get over 6,400 million of these into 1 square inch, so the microporous filters are incredibly fine.) The KN95 is splash resistant and non-clogging.
