After graduating in 2008 from Parson's The New School for Design in New York and Paris with a nomination for 'Designer of the Year', Sarah worked at the Gap designing women's accessories before launching her own line in 2012. Derived from the Japanese word 'Karaoke,' meaning 'Empty Orchestra', KARA is an exploration of curiosity and creativity. Fast forward to today, it is now part of the CFDA's prestigious Incubator program and is stocked at iconic retailers such as Opening Ceremony, Barneys, Harvey Nichols and Lane Crawford, just to name a few. Having recently launched its Spring/Summer 2016 collection, KARA showcases its quirky vision of stylish modernity and proves once again that it is a brand that demands our attention. We recently had the chance to ask Sarah about what motivates her, what her dream girl KARA is like, and of course what her favorite karaoke jams are. Check out the full interview below and find out why Sarah Law is the bag designer you need to know.
KARA reimagines her childhood lunch box with glittery rhinestones
The Clutch is an ode to the first cookbook by New York chef and author Angela Dimayuga. In celebration of Angela Dimayuga's first cookbook, Filipinx: Heritage Recipes from the Diaspora, KARA teamed up with the New York-based multidisciplinary chef, author and artist to create a new bag.
Based on Dimayuga's upbringing in the Bay Area as a first-generation Asian-American, the silhouette arrives in the form of a bag covered in glittering rhinestones and lined with satin. Influenced by the creative's brown bag lunches her mother used to pack her as a child, the design features elements of a lunch box while maintaining its chic look.
'For me, a lunch box is so related to my upbringing as a Filipino-American and my parents want me to feel American. They would give me a brown snack every day - filling it with American snacks like Capri Sun, Doritos, sometimes a sandwich, because that's what the other Americans were eating and that was them exploring luxury,' Dimayuga shares. 'And of course, at certain times I also had rice and spam in my lunch box, but I know they found special joy in giving me a brown snack.'
The Crystal Mesh Lunch Bag is now available for purchase on the KARA website. The matching crystal mesh apron is available for pre-order and will ship in December.
