London is a city of night owls. And rightly so. The city streets, the crowds and its bridges lit up at night is something you have to see to believe, especially in the summer months.

A 24-hour metro service that operates on weekends in some of the main lines and night buses all week long makes traveling around the city after dark much easier. But where to go?

Explore the many fun things to do in London at night - from museum slumber parties to spectacular views of iconic buildings. This handy guide has your back.

1. Museum delayed

Many of London's most famous museums and galleries are open late on select days, including the British Museum, Science Museum, Tate Modern, National Gallery and London Transport Museum. Often busy during the day, these spaces are quieter at night, allowing you to enjoy your time and explore at your leisure.

And if you can't bear to leave, why not throw a good old-fashioned sleepover (who said kids should have all the fun?). Dino Snores at the Natural History Museum lets you roam freely, like a dinosaur, enjoying the galleries and temporary exhibitions. It also offers a 3-course feast, live music, movie marathon, science shows, comedy and drinks...and bug tasting! It's a unique entertainment experience.

2. Fragment view

With 95 floors and 310 meters to the tip, The Shard is the tallest building in all of Europe. Experience some of London's best views from the open-air deck. There are restaurants and shops dotted around the floors. And, this may sound strange, but don't forget to use the bathroom. Bathrooms are 244 meters above London. With floor-to-ceiling aerial views, trust us when we say these are the most spectacular bathrooms in London.

3. Theaters

Head to London's West End, also known as Theatreland, for an evening performance. With a huge variety of plays, musicals, cabarets and more, there's something for everyone.

The Soho Theater is known for its late performances until 12pm - a perfect after-dinner treat.

4. Time to eat

As the sun sets and your stomach starts to grumble, check out some of London's quirkiest restaurants. Recognized for its enormous gastronomic diversity, the city never fails to offer dinner ideas. If you're feeling fancy, have a James Bond-style night out at Park Chinois , a 1930s-style Shanghai lounge in Mayfair.

Or, if you want to channel your inner Peaky Blinder, Bistro Union lets you experience the best of British food. Try traditional dishes including Lancashire hot pot, frog in the hole and a fabulous fish pie.

With thousands of restaurants to choose from, there's the perfect place to suit every taste and budget.

5. Movie Night

We understand. We are the same. After a busy day of sightseeing, sometimes all you want to do is sit back and watch a movie. Curzon cinemas are scattered across London, some with spacious seats and licensed bars. Ideal for a relaxing night with the family or a romantic evening with your partner.

With their quirky and luxurious interiors, these theaters are perfect for taking the weight off your feet. Our favorites are the Soho, Mayfair and Bloomsbury branches.

6. The Ceremony of the Keys

This evening event is so painfully British that we wouldn't be surprised if someone showed up and placed fish and chips in the palm of your hand while you watched the proceedings.

This historic nighttime activity that is fun for the whole family can be found at the Tower of London. The famous Ceremony of the Keys is part of the process of locking the Tower for the night. A centuries-old tradition, it involves secret passwords, large key rings, Beefeaters and military music. Advance reservation is required.

From its central vantage point, the London Eye allows you to appreciate the city's most iconic sights. Too busy during the day? Check the London Eye website as closing times vary by date. A walk at sunset can be magical.

9. Night tours

Trace the Ripper's footsteps. Solve the century-old mystery of who he really was. Full disclosure, the chances of you doing this are pretty low, but hey, if you're a fan of environmental 'spookums', you're going to love this either way. Take this unique night tour through East London's mysterious alleys and secret alleys.
