What is 1% For The Planet?
1% for the Planet is an organisation that connects businesses and individuals who are passionate about protecting the environment with a range of incredible charities around the world that are working to save our planet. Businesses (like us) pledge to donate at least 1% of their annual sales to this vital work, and bit by bit, a global movement is created. We believe this is the future of business. One that balances profit with doing good. So far, members of the network have donated more than $270 million to the environment.
How it started
Sharing a passion for the natural world, Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia), and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Files), realised their responsibility as individuals and business owners to help protect the planet. In 2002, they decided to give 1% of their sales to environmental causes, and this is when 1% For The Planet was born.
Their idea was to connect consciously-minded individuals and businesses to a network which would allow them to maximise their giving. Collectively, they would create a global movement to protect and restore the natural resources every one of us depends upon. In short, their mission is to ‘bring dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving’.
The 1% for the Planet network
Since its launch in 2002, 1% for the Planet has certified over $250 million in support to approved environmental nonprofits, including Friends of the Earth, World Land Trust and Surfers Against Sewage (to name just a few). In total, they support over 4,500 nonprofits. The 1% network is made up of almost five thousand businesses, including Patagonia, Caudalie, Pukka and Klean Kanteen, and over two hundred individuals, who have all taken the 1% pledge.
Why it’s important
Giving back is at the core of who we are as a business. We’ve always said that the health of people and planet is our driving force. And we mean it. Following on from the success of past partnerships with the likes of World Land Trust, we wanted to find a way to create an even bigger impact, and join a global movement for good. And it wouldn’t work without you. Every time you shop with us, you’re helping to give back to our planet. It (quite literally) means the world.
Non-nano
This term is generally understood to refer to nanoparticles that are more than 100 nanometers in size. The concern with particles smaller than this size is that they are more easily absorbed by the skin and may therefore harm living tissues within the body. This filter only applies to our sunscreens that contain nanoparticles over 100nm in size.
Vegan
This filter confirms that the product is suitable for vegans (i.e. the formulation contains no animal-derived ingredients). Additionally, this filter will also highlight products that have been certified vegan by a third-party organisation such as the Vegan Society or PETA.
The Ingredients
To help customers make an informed choice, we disclose the complete ingredient list (INCI) for each product in our website so you know exactly what’s inside. There are ingredients we avoid based on scientific research and our expertise. Our Doctor Chemist, a member of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, advises us in product formulations, artificial chemicals and their potential harmful effects. We also follow the guidelines published by the UK Soil Association, Ecocert, NaTrue, USDA and other related regulatory bodies. Below are the guidelines we follow.
