How to calculate the duty and tax on an export

The Department for International Trade has launched a new tool to help UK based business shippers check how to export goods correctly. The tool was launching in February 2020 and is still in Beta at the time of this article. The tool provides users with information on rules and restrictions for shipments being exported overseas. Namely, the rules and restrictions on the senders specific products, what tax and duty would be applicable to the product when it arrives in the destination country and what exporting documents are required. To start, the tool requires the user to select the country of destination that the goods are being shipped to. This is because different customs authorities around the world make their own regulations and requirements, in addition to duty and tax rates. We'll use the USA as an example.

To use the tool the user will then need to enter exactly what is being sent in the parcel (in detail). For example, if sending 'shoes' the tool needs to know the materials that make up the shoe (leather or rubber soles and uppers). Alternatively, if already known a commodity code can be used. One really good thing about this tool is the ability to search by keyword or browse through an A-Z list of products. Classifying goods is sometimes a difficult task because some items won't be listed by name but by 'what it's used for' instead.

The next screen now requires the user to choose the commodity code which 'best matches' the product that is being exported. This is the most difficult part of the classification because more often the specific item 'mobile phone cases' will not feature in the lists. A process of elimination is required to reach the most suitable commodity code.

Shipping goods out of the UK? Consider these export packaging options

Shipping and logistics might be your forte, but how much do you really know about your export packaging options? Choosing the correct packaging option will ensure that your consignment reaches its destination unscathed and in good time. And you know what that means? Greater profits and a professional business image. For all business owners, these are paramount concerns.

What to consider when choosing your packaging

Of course, there are various key elements that need to be considered before export packaging can be decided on. These include:

Protecting the enclosed goods (some items are more fragile than others)

Ensuring security of the products

The method of transport being used

Current legislation governing the transport and logistics of your specific consignment type.

Regardless of whether you use UPS, DX, DHL, FedEx, TNT, Palletways, ParcelForce, Royal Mail or another cheap parcel delivery firm to send your goods, it is important to select suitable packaging for your export.

Below are 3 export packaging options to consider:

1. Drums

If you are transporting a liquid, powder, or items that must remain dry, drums are a possible option. Most shipping companies can arrange steel, continuous-cast carbon steel, and polyethylene drums.

2. Crates and boxes

It's important not to confuse the two when it comes to determining the packaging strength of boxes and crates. To rely on the strength rating of a crate, all six sides must be secured in place. Boxes work differently. The rated strength refers to the total weight that the box can support without the top and sides. Shrink-wrapping can add stability and security to both of these options.

3. Pallets

If you are shipping a consignment of smaller cartons and boxes, you can keep them all together with pallets. Pallets are loaded with boxes and secured. The pallets can then be easily moved, loaded, or unloaded with a forklift. The pallets don't just keep boxes grouped together, but also protect the goods from damage during transportation.
