1900s

Louis Copeland & Sons has been a family business for four generations. We trace our heritage back to Hyman Coplan. Originally from Lithuania, Hyman Coplan travelled across Europe and arrived in Ireland in the early 1900s.

1908

Hyman was a trouser maker working on Parliament Street. After marrying his wife Harriot McCarthy, Coplan changed his name to Copeland, they moved to Capel Street where he also opened a workshop. Hyman and Harriot later had two children Louis and Rachel.

1933

Hyman's son Louis followed in his father's footsteps to become a tailor. His daughter Rachel also worked in the business as a trouser maker. In 1933, after working in Cork for some years, Louis moved back to Dublin to work in, and eventually take over, the family business. He changed the name over the door to Louis Copeland & Sons. Louis married May and had five children, Paul, Louis, Jackie, Adrian and Carl.

1960s

In the late 1960s both Louis and Adrian began working with their father in the shop and workshop. During this time the main shop was in 30 Capel Street and the workshop, which employed approximately 40 people, was just next door in 33 Capel Street. Louis married Mary and had three children, Louis Jnr, Avril and Rachel. Adrian married Anne and had two children, Adrian Jnr and Aaron.

1980s

The Louis Copeland & Sons business began to expand throughout the 1980s. An important part of this expansion was the introduction of Ready to Wear suits. In 1980 our second store on Lower Pembroke Street opened. This store is managed today by Adrian and his son Adrian Jnr.

1984

The business continued to expand with the opening of our third store on Wicklow Street in 1984. The Louis Copeland & Sons name became synonymous with fine tailoring, catering to stars including Pierce Brosnan and Richard Harris.

1990s

The Capel Street store evolved further during the 1990s when it moved from Number 33 to its current location in 39-41 Capel Street. There was a break from tradition as Louis Copeland & Sons began to stock more casual brands and garments including blazers, button down shirts, polo shirts, chinos, jeans and footwear.

2000s

This decade saw more expansion within the company with the opening of a further four stores in Galway, CHQ, Dundrum Town Centre and our online store louiscopeland.com. The expansion of the casualwear brands continued with the introduction of Gant and Ted Baker. Today Louis Copeland & Sons operates six stores plus the website louiscopeland.com.
