QV v. watery cream
Many doctors used to prescribe a watery cream for eczema and dermatitis sufferers. Researchers have found that aqueous cream containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can increase water loss and cause thinning of healthy skin.31
QV UK products are SLS free and use glycerol in their products. This natural humectant helps the skin retain moisture, which in turn helps maintain the skin barrier.
QV v. Soap
Eczema-prone skin loses water and natural oils more easily than healthy skin. Soap, being alkaline, dries the skin and, therefore, is not ideal for eczema or people with dry skin32. Using an emollient-rich liquid cleanser, such as QV Gentle Wash, helps support the skin's natural barrier function, providing better protection against dehydration.
Many soaps also contain the popular ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. SLS can cause contact dermatitis and aggravate eczema by breaking the oil layer that prevents the skin from drying out33. All QV UK products are sodium lauryl sulphate free.
QV v. shower gels
It's tempting to choose a shower gel that looks natural and has a great fragrance. All QV products are fragrance free. QV Gentle Wash is designed for sensitive skin, so it can be used if you suffer from eczema, dermatitis or sensitive skin.
QV v. Other moisturizers
Surprisingly, even creams specifically designed for eczema can contain ingredients that irritate the skin. Many cosmetic moisturizers contain ingredients such as fragrances, lanolin and SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate).
Lanolin is an effective moisturizer, used for centuries on skin, nails and hair. But it is also mildly comedogenic, meaning it sticks to the skin and can block pores - which is not good news for people with sensitive skin34. QV Skin Lotion, QV Intensive Ointment and QV Cream do not contain lanolin or propylene glycol.
QV v. Bubble bath
Fragrances found in the bubble bath can be skin allergens, irritants and photosensitizers36. All QV products are fragrance free to help reduce potential irritation. Some emollient bath products can work by resting on the surface of the water, covering the skin only when entering and exiting the bath. Unlike these, QV bath oil is fully dispersed in water, meaning your skin is completely covered during soaking, providing long-lasting hydration.
